Up, down … your choice, whichever it is … You are the Key.
With a new U.S. president-elect and administration readying itself to take office and pandemic vaccinations on the horizon, you can almost smell the airborne euphoria taking out the airborne COVID-19. 2021 is going to be so much better than 2020.
Ok. I get it, let’s suspend disbelief for a moment, go with it and assume we will all be able to get back to ‘normal’. Three questions.
What is normal?
Was it that great before?
Is that what you want?
I wrote about The Social Dilemma at the end of September, so was interested to read Nir Eyal’s take. Eyal, if you recall had a bit part in that movie. Interesting not only to read how he thinks his appearance was taken out of context but his conclusion.
Believe in your agency
We have the power to control our tech habits, but only if we believe we can. If we believe we’re not in control, we’re doomed before we start. Why try if we’re convinced the algorithms are more powerful than we are? Why have conversations with our children and coworkers if movies like The Social Dilemma tell us it’s pointless?

I modified that final paragraph and made it mine, to remind you of the fundamental truth of People First.
The People First Coda
We have the power to control our lives, but only if we believe we can. If we believe we’re not in control, we’re doomed before we start. Why try if we’re convinced we can’t?
I have no idea what 2021 will bring. And neither does anybody else. I don’t care who they are and what they say. If they are that good at predictions, check out what they were saying a year ago about 2020. I am pretty sure that none of them predicted the worst pandemic since the Spanish Flu, the deepest financial depression in nearly a hundred years or a global #BLM movement provoking civil unrest threatening the global power structure that has been in place for centuries.
The truth is that what happens for you in 2021 is down to you. Start working on that now.
